DIGITAL PERIODICALS ARCHIVE

The "Fiamma Lanzara" Library holds a unique documentary heritage, chronicling the evolution of Fashion and Costume through the centuries in all their expressions. With the goal of preserving, enhancing, and making this invaluable legacy accessible, the major project of digitisation and metadata enrichment of historical magazine collections has been launched, covering the period 1818-1955.

Strongly supported by A. Lupo Lanzara and Furio Francini (respectively, President and CEO of Accademia Costume & Moda), the project aims to offer an advanced research service with innovative technological tools, enabling detailed and in-depth exploration of the contents.

The initiative was launched in 2017, thanks to the collaboration between the “Fiamma Lanzara” Library at ACM and C.EL.DA. (Data Processing Centre), with the purpose of providing students, researchers, and industry professionals with privileged access to a collection of rare materials of extraordinary historical value.

The service is accessible on-campus to all users via the Academy’s Wi-Fi.
A project that looks to the future, keeping the memory of the past alive and offering new perspectives for study and inspiration.

PROJECT PHASES

PHASE 1
CENSUS
The entire periodical collection (1825–2018) has been catalogued through a dedicated portal, recording the "identifying" data of each individual issue.
PHASE 1
PHASE 2
SCANNING
The project segment (1825 - 1950) has been digitised using state-of-the-art equipment, ensuring the preservation of its characteristics and condition.
PHASE 2
PHASE 3
METADATA TAGGING
Each of the 74.000+ digitised pages has been enriched with metadata through the insertion of keywords, enabling precise and detailed searches. Controlled vocabularies have been created by mapping the entire spectrum of industry-specific terms, standardised with the aid of reference works such as Vestimenti antichi e contemporanei. Scheda VeAC e Lemmario, the thesaurus of the BNCF Subject Index, and specialised sector vocabularies for historical terms.
